Tar Heels Fall to Spartans in Fort Myers
The Carolina Tar Heels faced off against the Michigan State Spartans in Fort Myers, and it was a frustrating night for the Heels. Despite starting strong, they lost 74-58. In the final moments, Carolina couldn’t hit a shot, and their search for a title in a Thanksgiving week event continues, having last won at Maui in 2016.
In the second half, Michigan State stood out, shooting an impressive 59.3%. In contrast, Carolina struggled, finishing the game with a dismal 38.2% from the field. The team also managed just nine assists, a season low. They shot 4-for-23 from three-point range, while hitting 17 of their 32 two-point attempts.
At one point, Carolina led 22-15 in the first half, but things changed dramatically. Over the next 22 minutes, they took 16 of their 34 shots from beyond the arc, allowing Michigan State to outscore them 49-30. Such a drastic shift in strategy proved detrimental.
A moment that highlighted their struggles came late in the game. Carolina allowed a wide-open jumper from Carson Cooper. While he missed, Coen Carr swooped in for the dunk. Michigan State capitalized on opportunities, collecting 46 points in the paint and shooting well from close range, a surprising feat considering Carolina’s top defense, which usually limits opponents to 35.7% inside.
Jeremy Fears Jr. excelled for the Spartans, scoring a career-high 19 points and providing seven assists. In comparison, Kyan Evans for Carolina had a tough night, managing just four points. The Tar Heels could have benefitted from Seth Trimble’s presence, who might have offered the much-needed drive to the basket.
Rebounding was another struggle for Carolina. Michigan State snagged nine offensive boards in the first half, translating them into valuable points. Although Carolina improved in the second half, limiting MSU’s offensive rebounds, it wasn’t enough to turn the tide.
Jonathan Powell had a bright moment for Carolina, leading with six rebounds and scoring one three-pointer. However, overall, the bench struggled, contributing only five points and falling short to Michigan State’s 20.
Historically, the Tar Heels and Spartans have had close matchups, often filled with intense energy. Fort Myers was no exception, as the gym buzzed with excitement—the atmosphere reminiscent of a Maui showdown.
