Imagine Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park in November. The colors are rich: ochre, rust, bright blue, and lime green. The air is warm, hinting at rain soon to come.
On my first day at the luxurious Chichele Presidential Lodge, anticipation hung in the air. We patiently waited for a pack of wild dogs sleeping near the Luangwa River, hoping for their awakening. Dark clouds gathered, and lightning flickered in the distance. A storm seemed imminent.
But the dogs snoozed on, occasionally disturbed by their restless siblings. Our guide, Perry, decided to head back to the lodge before the rain made the roads impassable.
Returning to Chichele felt like a treat. The lodge recently won the Best Hotel Conversion at the AHEAD MEA Awards in Dubai. Designed to elevate Zambia as a top luxury wildlife destination, Chichele Promises comfort while honoring its history.
Originally built in 1972 by Zambian President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, Chichele served as a retreat for dignitaries, including Queen Elizabeth II. The recent redesign respects its past, retaining key architectural features while bringing in modern comforts.
The new lodge offers breathtaking views from its hilltop perch. Eco-conscious design makes the most of its surroundings, ensuring the buildings blend into the landscape. This careful planning protects the area’s natural beauty.
The lodge features spacious guest areas, an inviting swimming pool, a spa, and a gym—all built with an eye toward sustainability. Guests can unwind in a cozy winter lounge or enjoy meals on the terrace with stunning views.
Each suite is designed for privacy and comfort, complete with a plunge pool and outdoor shower. For families, interconnected suites with a private lounge make group travel easy and fun.
The lodge supports local artisans by using their crafts in the decor, from bespoke lampshades to restored antique furniture. The colors inside mirror the vibrant landscape outside, creating a cohesive aesthetic that feels both modern and deeply rooted in Zambian culture.
The dining experience at Chichele is superb. They focus on fresh and local produce, often sourced from community initiatives, such as Sowing the Seeds of Success, which supports local women. This connection ensures meals are both delicious and meaningful.
Guests can enjoy a surprise bush pancake bar during game drives, with flavors like strawberry and chocolate to choose from. It’s these little touches that make the stay memorable.
Although the rainstorm I expected was brief, it left behind another beautiful day in South Luangwa.
The park itself covers about 9,050 km² and boasts some of Africa’s highest wildlife densities. Visitors can spot elephants, lions, leopards, and over 400 bird species, making each game drive an adventure.
Chichele Presidential is open from March to January, allowing visitors to experience Zambia’s rich wildlife year-round.
