As kids, we often heard the question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It made us dream big and think about what was possible for our futures.
The 2025 SMART529 “When I Grow Up” essay contest is a great way to keep those dreams alive. West Virginia State Treasurer Larry Pack has opened the contest for entries, and students have until February 28 to submit their essays.
There are fantastic prizes up for grabs—students can win up to $5,000 for their college savings, while teachers can earn a $2,500 cash prize.
This contest encourages young students to broaden their horizons. They’ll realize that higher education isn’t just about going to a four-year college. Valuable paths include trade schools, apprenticeships, and community colleges, too.
Treasurer Pack believes in the power of this contest: “I hope it inspires our West Virginia kids to think about their career options. We want to hear from those beginning to explore how they can reach their dreams through education.”
