China’s Misinformation Won’t Change the Truth: Arunachal Is the Heart of Bharat

On November 21, a UK-based Indian citizen, Prema Wangjom Thongdok, faced an unsettling experience at an international airport. While traveling from London to Japan, immigration officers deemed her Indian passport “invalid” because it listed Arunachal Pradesh as her birthplace. This incident wasn’t just a simple immigration issue; it struck at the heart of India’s sovereignty. For Indians, Arunachal Pradesh is not merely a spot on the map—it’s an integral part of the nation.

Historically, Arunachal Pradesh has always been recognized as Indian territory. However, China has repeatedly challenged this reality. From issuing stapled visas to residents of Arunachal Pradesh to altering maps and obstructing Indian leaders from visiting their own land, Beijing engages in tactics that aim to undermine India’s claim to the region.

This isn’t merely about borders; it’s about identity. China employs psychological tactics to question India’s legitimacy on the world stage. The treatment Prema received reflects a broader strategy—a way to cast doubt on Arunachal Pradesh’s status as Indian. If such challenges are ignored, they could set a dangerous precedent.

Furthermore, India must rethink its economic ties with China in light of these territorial disputes. Currently, China benefits significantly more from trade with India. This creates an imbalance, where Indian spending supports a regime that disrespects Indian sovereignty. Many experts assert that India’s economic leverage could be better utilized. Just as former President Trump imposed tariffs to protect U.S. interests, India must consider a similar approach, especially when its territory is in question.

When locals face harassment abroad due to misguided propaganda, it’s a national insult, not just an individual one. Every Indian, regardless of their background, should rally to defend the dignity of Arunachal Pradesh.

A strong stance from India could be seen as principled leadership rather than confrontation. Therefore, it’s crucial for India’s leaders to deliver a clear message: Arunachal Pradesh is an inseparable part of India, and any attempts to undermine that will meet with consequences.
