Snow is on its way to Massachusetts! A coastal storm scheduled for Tuesday is expected to cover much of the interior with a blanket of snow, while the coast will see a chilly mix of rain and wet snowflakes.
Cold air will be nearby enough to allow for plowable snow, especially in central and western Massachusetts, including places like the Berkshires and Worcester County. Travel could be tricky, so be cautious if you’re heading out.
The storm isn’t massive, but it brings enough snow to make things interesting. States like Vermont and New Hampshire will likely see heavier snowfall due to colder temperatures and higher elevations. For instance, a recent report indicated that these areas may accumulate more than five inches as the storm moves through.
Along the coast, areas such as the South Shore will mostly experience rain, with lower chances for accumulation. The critical rain/snow line will fall around Route 44, where a mix will occur. Just northwest of this line, more snow is expected, particularly around Interstate 95 between Boston and Providence.
As the storm develops, meteorologists are closely monitoring where the snow bands may strengthen. A slight shift in the storm’s path could lead to significantly different outcomes for snowfall totals in nearby areas.
For the Boston region, expectations range from light rain to a few inches of snow. The area hasn’t seen a significant storm yet this season; a recent analysis showed that Boston’s last substantial snowfall happened on February 25, 2022, with 8.5 inches recorded. This drought underscores a trend over the past few winters, where average snowfall fell below what’s typical—about 50 inches total in the last three years compared to the usual annual average of 48.7 inches.
Looking ahead, the WBZ-TV weather team predicts an upcoming winter total of 55 to 65 inches for Boston and slightly more for Worcester at 75 to 85 inches. While Tuesday’s storm won’t be historic, it could be a sign that winter is finally knocking on the door.
