Supporting Families in Need: How a Mineola Non-Profit Delivers Fresh Food and Delicious Recipes

MINEOLA, Texas – In a heartwarming effort, a non-profit in Mineola is stepping up to help families in need with simple recipes and fresh ingredients. Elizabeth Dry, the founder of Promise of Peace Gardens, has launched a food-education initiative called Soup It Forward. This program, which originated in the Dallas area, aims to equip families with cooking skills while fostering a spirit of sharing.

With Soup It Forward, families receive all the ingredients for a monthly soup recipe, a cooking guide, and a container for sharing a serving with someone in need. Dry’s inspiration for the program came from her experiences working with youth in West Dallas and East Dallas, where she saw many families relying on food pantries. She wanted to create a program that not only nourished the body but also educated families about food.

“I wanted to develop something that brought people together and promoted good nutrition,” Dry explained. The initiative combines cooking with cultural learning, showcasing diverse recipes collected from chefs in Dallas. It’s about more than just making soup; it’s about kindness and connection.

The demand for such programs has been highlighted by recent studies. According to a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food insecurity affects millions of families across the country. Programs like Soup It Forward offer practical solutions to this issue while also building community.

Recently, Dry and her team hosted an event at Cope Ranch in Mineola to distribute the first kits. There are now drop-off locations across the area for those interested in donating kits. This grassroots effort illustrates how community involvement can make a difference in tackling food insecurities.
