A court in Dhaka, Bangladesh, recently sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to five years in prison for corruption related to a government land project. Her niece, British MP Tulip Siddiq, received a two-year sentence for allegedly influencing her aunt to benefit her family in this project.
Judge Rabiul Alam stated that Hasina misused her authority. Siddiq was implicated in securing a land allotment for her mother and siblings. In addition to the prison sentences, all three were fined $813, and the land allotment was revoked. There are still 14 more suspects linked to the case.
Khan Mohammed Mainul Hasan, the prosecutor, had pushed for life sentences for the main defendants but expressed disappointment about the outcome. The Awami League party, to which Hasina belongs, claimed the verdict was expected and criticized the anti-corruption body as politically motivated. They denied all allegations and insisted the trial lacked fairness, a view echoed by both local and international legal experts.
Siddiq, who has represented Hampstead and Highgate in the UK Parliament, rejected the charges as politically driven and stated that she is a British citizen, not Bangladeshi. Recently, she stepped down from her government position due to the controversy surrounding her family.
Bangladesh’s political tension is thickening. Hasina, currently in exile in India, was previously sentenced to death in absentia for crimes against humanity relating to last year’s crackdown on protests. Her other family members are also facing legal troubles and are living abroad.
This recent verdict adds to a larger narrative of political unrest in Bangladesh, with international observers expressing concern over the judicial processes. The current interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, is gearing up for a parliamentary election next month, signaling possible shifts in the country’s political landscape.
