Food Bank of Manatee Experiences 40-50% Surge in Demand: How You Can Help This Giving Tuesday

SARASOTA, Fla. — The Food Bank of Manatee is seeing a significant jump in demand, with requests for help rising by 40-50%. Amy Tauri, Vice President of Development for Meals on Wheels Plus of Manatee, said this is the highest need she’s witnessed in seven years.

The food bank supports over 95 pantries and partner agencies throughout Manatee County. Tauri noted that families are feeling the strain. “People are juggling bills and often find there’s not enough money left to buy food,” she explained in a recent interview.

Several factors are pushing demand higher, including the lingering effects of last year’s hurricanes, the high cost of living, and rising insurance rates in Florida. “The storms affected everyone. It’s becoming really expensive to live here, and many families’ wages aren’t keeping pace,” Tauri added.

The poverty rate in Palmetto is staggering—around 51% of residents live at or below the poverty line. At a recent Thanksgiving turkey distribution, the food bank served 750 families but had to turn many away due to overwhelming demand, with lines described as the longest in seven years.

Tauri shared a poignant story about Mara and her daughter Adeline, who came to the event after losing everything in the hurricanes. With a fifth child on the way, they needed help to celebrate Thanksgiving. “They’re working hard to feed their family, but sometimes life gets tough and they need support,” she said.

To boost Giving Tuesday efforts, local donors Steve and Sarah Baird have pledged a $100,000 matching gift. This means every dollar donated up to that amount will be doubled. Tauri emphasized that even small contributions can make a difference; “Every bit counts, and no gift is too small.”

While the Food Bank of Manatee is the only food bank in the area, its mission is more crucial than ever. Organizations like this play a vital role in supporting families in need, helping them navigate tough times.
