Police in San Jose have arrested a 17-year-old linked to a triple shooting at the Westfield Valley Fair Mall on Black Friday. The arrest was made Sunday night, and police released a photo of the suspect in handcuffs.
San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph shared that the teen had a previous arrest in February for possessing a loaded firearm and was on probation during the shooting. A 21-year-old woman has also been arrested for allegedly aiding the teen in his escape. She was recognized in surveillance footage pushing a stroller that night. While they share a familial connection, details about their relationship were not disclosed.
The shooting occurred around 5:40 p.m., with reports of three injured victims. Fortunately, their injuries were not life-threatening. Initially, police suspected the incident was gang-related, and further investigation confirmed that it stemmed from the suspect’s confrontation with an alleged rival gang member. He opened fire, targeting the rival and inadvertently hitting two bystanders.
After the incident, the mall reopened to shoppers the following day. Mayor Matt Mahan praised the efforts of officers in making the quick arrest, stating their dedication was commendable.
