Fire Disrupts Food Pantry Operations, Community Rallies to Help
LEON VALLEY, Texas – Rivers of Hope Ministries usually serves families without a hitch. But after a recent fire at Grace Fellowship Baptist Church, everything changed.
“This isn’t just about food distribution anymore; we’re clearing out because of the fire,” said Stacie Rivers, co-CEO of the ministry.
The fire broke out Sunday morning at the church, where Rivers of Hope runs its food pantry. By Monday, the team was focused on giving away all the food they had left in storage. As repairs begin, they’re searching for a new place to work.
Stacie is determined. “We hope to come back stronger and bigger,” she said. Over the past few months, the pantry has ramped up services, growing from 50 families a month to 250. “With the economy the way it is, we need to keep serving our community,” Stacie added.
Before distribution began, cars lined up outside the church. Volunteers of all ages waited to load boxes of food into vehicles. “We’re here to help,” said Terry Rivers, the other co-CEO. “It’s an honor to serve.”
Despite the challenges, Stacie has found a temporary place for their storage units. Now, they’re seeking a new location for the pantry and volunteers to help them rebuild.
Food insecurity is a growing issue. A recent report from Feeding America shows that over 38 million people in the U.S. struggle with hunger. This spike in need reflects larger economic trends. With inflation rising, many families are turning to food pantries for support.
The response from the community has been heartening. Social media is buzzing with offers of help and donations. Local businesses have started food drives to support the pantry during this tough time.
Rivers of Hope Ministries aims to adapt and overcome. As they move forward, they’re determined to continue their vital work in the community.
