In Sebring, local junior and high school students have come together to make a big difference this holiday season. Last month, the Student Senate from both schools teamed up to support families in need. Their goal? To provide food and care items for those in the district.
This collaborative effort was boosted by the school’s Ecology Club and the Success and Wellness group. They held a “Trick or Treat for Turkeys” fundraiser, raising an impressive $1,000. This allowed the students to include either a turkey or ham in each care package.
Lori DeHoff, the Junior High Student Senate Advisor, expressed her pride in the students. “This year’s drive truly expanded our support for district families,” she said. Each of the 36 families received bags filled with food, pantry staples, and hygiene items.
Once the donations were collected, students took on the task of organizing, packaging, and labeling everything for distribution. All items stayed within the Sebring community, ensuring that local families benefited directly from the drive.
Community support for local initiatives is vital, especially during challenging times. Studies show that participation in community service can enhance students’ social skills and empathy. According to a survey by Points of Light, 70% of young people involved in service projects feel a strong sense of belonging and purpose.
Efforts like this not only help those in need but also foster a sense of unity among students. As they work together, they learn valuable life lessons about compassion and teamwork.
