ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The High Point University women’s basketball team celebrated a strong 64-44 victory over South Carolina State University on Friday. This win marked a significant milestone for the Panthers, making them only the sixth team in Big South women’s basketball history to start a season with a 9-1 record. The last team to achieve this was UNC Asheville in the 2015-16 season.
The Panthers’ defense was tough, limiting the Bulldogs to just 44 points and forcing 25 turnovers. At halftime, High Point led 28-16, even though their offense was a bit slow to start. They quickly stretched their lead in the second half, kicking off the fourth quarter with a rapid 6-0 run, eventually leading by as much as 22 points before finishing with a 20-point victory.
Aaliyah Collins shined for High Point, scoring 19 points. Nevaeh Zavala contributed 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Dom Nesland and Peyton Gerdes each added nine points, while Anna Hager secured eight rebounds.
Statistics reveal that High Point shot an impressive 49% from the field and dominated in the paint, outscoring South Carolina State 40-22.
Looking forward, the Panthers will return to the court on December 14 at 2:00 p.m., where they’ll face North Carolina Central University.
