Heroic Officers Prevent Attack at University of Delaware: A Story of Quick Action and Courage

In Newark, Delaware, a community is expressing its gratitude to three police officers after they prevented a potential attack at the University of Delaware. Officers Christopher Hewlitt, Nathan Jupiter, and Jay Scerbo were honored for their quick actions, recognized by local leaders for saving lives.

On November 24, while on their routine patrols, the officers spotted a car in a park after hours. Their instincts led them to investigate. Inside the vehicle, they found a loaded handgun converted to a submachine gun, body armor, and a notebook with plans for an attack on the campus.

The suspect, Luqmaan Kahn, was arrested without incident. Authorities believe his intended attack was stopped just in time.

During a recognition ceremony, Delaware House Speaker Melissa Minor-Brown emphasized the officers’ vital role. “We could have faced a very bad situation, but we’re not because of you,” she said, highlighting the significance of their timely response.

Chief Patrick Ogden of the University of Delaware Police expressed his gratitude: “Thank you for following your instincts and averting a potential terrorist attack.” New Castle County Police Chief Col. James Leonard III also praised the officers, saying, “The pride we have in you should stay with you throughout your careers.”

Community support for the officers is strong. They were recognized by both the State House and Senate, with residents and politicians alike expressing their appreciation. Senator Bryan Townsend summed it up: “Truly, truly, thank you.”

### A Broader Context

Incidents like this remind us of the crucial role law enforcement plays in our society. According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, about 86% of U.S. adults believe police officers do their jobs well. While not everyone feels this way, events like this highlight the importance of police presence and responsiveness in preventing crime.

The quick actions of Hewlitt, Jupiter, and Scerbo serve as an example of the proactive measures law enforcement can take. In recent years, there has been a trend towards community policing, where officers engage with the public to build trust and improve safety. This approach emphasizes the value of officers being on the ground, ready to act when needed.

The citizens of Newark can take pride in knowing that their police officers are dedicated to protecting their community. This incident not only showcases individual bravery but also highlights the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and citizens in creating a safer environment for everyone.
