University of Wyoming Wrestling Team Shines at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite
The University of Wyoming wrestling team made a strong impression on the first day of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite. Currently ranked eighth, with a score of 46.5 points, the Cowboys are gearing up for an exciting second day, with four wrestlers making it through to Saturday’s competitions—three of them in the semifinals.
Head coach Mark Branch expressed pride in the team’s performance. “We had some big wins and pulled off several upsets. That’s what this tournament is about—competing against wrestlers we don’t see often and gaining valuable ranked victories that can help later this season,” he said.
Highlighted performers include No. 4 Joey Novak (197), No. 24 Christian Carroll (HWT), and Luke Willochell (133), all set to wrestle in the semifinals. Meanwhile, No. 11 Eddie Neitenbach (184) continues in the consolation rounds.
Novak dominated his matches, winning decisively with a total score of 38-3 over three opponents. Carroll also secured three victories, including a noteworthy 11-2 major decision over No. 4 Taye Ghadiali from Michigan. Willochell surprised fans by beating both No. 15 Derrick Cardinal (South Dakota State) and No. 13 Sean Spidle (Northwestern).
Despite a tough quarterfinal match, Neitenbach rebounded nicely with a win over No. 15 Ian Bush later in the day. Other wrestlers like Gabe Willochell (149) and Riley Davis (174) had ranked wins before facing elimination.
Branch noted, “Some of our wrestlers had chances that didn’t go their way. It’s not about effort but learning from these experiences. These tournaments help pinpoint what needs improvement.”
As the action continues on Saturday at 11 a.m., fans can look forward to more thrilling matches.
