FBI Arrests University of Delaware Student in Alarming Plot Against Campus Police: What You Need to Know

Last week, a University of Delaware student named Luqmaan Khan was arrested for plotting an attack on a campus police building. The FBI charged him with federal weapons crimes after he was found with a loaded handgun and other weapons. Authorities discovered his plan when police saw him acting suspiciously in a disc golf park.

Khan, 25, was in his car around midnight when officers approached him. He seemed anxious and resisted their requests to exit the vehicle. Upon searching the car, police found a Glock .357 handgun, numerous ammunition magazines, body armor, binoculars, and a notebook detailing his violent thoughts.

His notebook included plans for using different guns in specific situations. For example, he indicated that an assault rifle was suitable for “open spaces,” while he noted the benefits of using tear gas for “room clearing.” Khan also made a hand-drawn map of what appeared to be the university police station, marking potential entry and exit points.

During the investigation, it became clear that Khan had targeted a specific University of Delaware police officer. In a letter to the university community, interim president Laura Carlson assured everyone that there were no immediate threats but acknowledged the severity of the situation.

Experts emphasize the importance of early intervention in cases of violent plots. Behavioral analysts suggest that individuals like Khan may signal their intentions through various warning signs, such as journals or changes in behavior. Understanding these signs is crucial in preventing violence.

Khan’s background adds another layer to the case. Originally from Pakistan, he was a U.S. citizen with no prior criminal record. After searching his home, federal agents found more weapons, including an unregistered Glock pistol and an M4 rifle. If convicted of the federal charges, he could face up to ten years in prison.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of campus safety and the ongoing concern regarding gun violence in educational settings. According to recent statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics, incidents of gun violence on college campuses have been increasing, prompting universities to strengthen their security measures.

As we consider the effects of this case on the University of Delaware community, it’s crucial to talk about mental health resources and open lines of communication. Creating a safe environment starts with understanding and addressing the underlying issues that can lead to such alarming behavior.
