GREENE COUNTY, Tenn. — A tragic accident on Friday claimed the life of Payton Cook, a 19-year-old freshman at Tusculum University. Payton was studying business administration and was a member of the men’s lacrosse team.
The incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. on Old Tusculum Road. According to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, an 18-year-old driver from West Virginia lost control of their vehicle while navigating a left-hand curve. The car veered off the road, traveling about 80 feet before crashing into a tree on the passenger side.
Payton sustained serious injuries and unfortunately did not survive. The driver also suffered injuries and has been charged with driving on roadways designated for specific traffic lanes. Both individuals were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Tusculum University expressed its sorrow over the loss. They are offering support to students, faculty, and staff affected by this tragic event. The university’s Office of Student Affairs, along with spiritual leaders, is working to provide comfort during this difficult time.
