Exciting News: University of Memphis in Talks to Hire USM’s Huff as New Football Coach!

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) may soon be looking for yet another head football coach as the 2026 season approaches. Reports suggest that Charles Huff, USM’s current head coach, is in talks with the University of Memphis for a new coaching position.

According to ESPN, Memphis is close to finalizing a five-year deal with Huff. This vacancy arose after Memphis’s previous coach, Ryan Silverfield, accepted a role with the University of Arkansas. Huff signed his contract with USM in December 2024, at $950,000 a year, after a successful stint at Marshall University.

In a promising turn for USM, the Golden Eagles managed to achieve a 7-5 record in 2025, marking a significant improvement after struggling with just four wins over the previous two seasons. This boost has made them bowl-eligible, highlighting the potential of the team under Huff’s leadership.

If Huff decides to take the Memphis job, his contract includes a buyout clause. It would require him to pay $1 million to USM if he leaves before December 8, 2025. If he departs by December 8, 2026, the buyout drops to $750,000.

Coaching changes can significantly impact a team’s performance and culture. Expert opinions indicate that stability in coaching often leads to better player development and recruitment. In recent years, programs without consistent leadership have struggled to maintain competitive performance levels.

As fans keep a close eye on this situation, social media reactions reflect a mix of support and concern. Many USM supporters hope Huff stays to build on the momentum he has created, while others understand the allure of a bigger program like Memphis.
