A one-day awareness program focused on climate change and urban ecology took place on December 6 in Dimapur. Titled “Building Collective Efforts Towards a Vibrant Society,” the event brought together a diverse group—including environmental experts, municipal leaders, youth, and community organizations—to tackle pressing environmental challenges in Nagaland.
Zhove Lohe, the Secretary and Director of Can Youth, opened the program, setting a positive tone for focused discussions. The sessions were led by experts like Adrian M Mahung, Alice Kamei, Tolivi N Sumi, and Thungchabemo Tungeo, CEO of the Dimapur Municipal Council. They covered key topics such as urban ecology, waste management, and the critical role of citizens in governance.
A highlight was a session by Arshel Akhter, an urbanist, who encouraged participants to brainstorm practical actions for community-driven environmental efforts. One key takeaway was the importance of waste segregation at its source. Participants suggested promoting youth-led activities, improving collaboration between municipal councils and community groups, and adopting specific areas for targeted environmental efforts.
A recent survey by the World Economic Forum found that over 70% of young people believe climate change will significantly impact their futures. This sentiment aligns with the call for more engagement among youth in environmental initiatives. In a world where cities are increasingly susceptible to climate change, the actions discussed in Dimapur could lead to meaningful change.
The program not only underscored the urgency of these challenges but also sparked hope for cleaner, more resilient neighborhoods through collective community action.
