A woman was shot on November 30 when three armed teens attempted to rob the Washington Food Mart on the West End of the city.
Police have arrested two of the suspects involved in the robbery. Christian Zavier Patrene, 19, and Christopher Ellis-Valperga, 18, were apprehended and face serious charges, including attempted homicide, in connection with the incident.
Julian Asbury, 17, was also arrested and faces similar charges. All three suspects entered the store around 10:30 p.m. on a Sunday night, trying to rob it at gunpoint. Witnesses reported that a woman, who was playing a video gambling machine, pulled her own gun in self-defense but was shot multiple times in the process.
Officers arrived shortly after the suspects fled and provided first aid to the woman. She was taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh. Although her identity and the full extent of her injuries remain undisclosed, authorities confirmed she is stable.
Investigators promptly identified the teens. They arrested Asbury the day after the robbery. Authorities obtained warrants for Patrene and Ellis-Valperga, eventually capturing them later when they announced the arrests on their Facebook page.
Ellis-Valperga faces multiple charges, including attempted homicide and robbery, while Patrene is charged with conspiracy related to these offenses. They appeared in court on Friday night and are being held without bail, awaiting their preliminary hearing on December 17.
Asbury, charged as an adult, is facing hefty penalties, including a $200,000 cash bond. His hearing is tentatively set for December 15.
