The Forest Department has created a committee to help reduce dangerous encounters between humans and wild animals in the Valparai region of Coimbatore. This decision came after a tragic incident where a five-year-old boy was killed by a leopard on a tea estate in Iyerpadi.
On December 7, Supriya Sahu, the Additional Chief Secretary for the Environment and Forest Department, announced the committee’s formation. This move followed a proposal from Rakesh Kumar Dogra, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden.
The committee will be led by S. Ramasubramanian, the Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests. Other members include the Deputy Director of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, the Sub-Collector of Pollachi, wildlife scientist T.R. Shankar Raman from the Nature Conservation Foundation, the Municipal Commissioner of Valparai, and the Assistant Commissioner of Labour (Plantations). They will assess local conditions and come up with recommendations to enhance conservation and safety efforts in the region. Their findings are expected to be submitted to the government in two weeks.
This year alone, three children from migrant worker families have tragically lost their lives due to attacks by leopards and sloth bears in areas within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. Increasing incidents like these highlight the urgent need for effective measures.
