Atrium Health is set to build a new $450 million hospital in York County, South Carolina. This new facility aims to shorten travel times for emergency care and improve access for local residents.
Many in the community are curious about how this might affect emergency response times. Fort Mill officials believe the hospital will enhance the area’s healthcare network. “It’s great to have more options,” said Fort Mill resident Olympia McCullough. However, she mentioned that insurance coverage can influence where people choose to go for care.
Another resident, Gene Guinn, who works in nursing, sees the benefit as well. “Having a hospital closer will open up job opportunities for me,” he shared.
Atrium has taken steps to integrate with local services. They recently agreed to manage Fort Mill EMS, which will help sustain emergency medical services in York County. According to the York County Council, this partnership is expected to improve critical care access across the community.
In a statement, Atrium Health acknowledged the demand for better emergency care in South Carolina, noting a significant percentage of their patients at Atrium Health Pineville come from this state. They anticipate York County’s population to grow by about 18% in the next five years, increasing the need for healthcare services.
Locals are optimistic about the new hospital. McCullough mentioned that many people prefer the Atrium Health brand and would welcome improved healthcare options.
As for the integration of emergency services, the county stated that 911 calls will continue to be directed to the nearest available unit, ensuring timely responses. This could mean that calls are split between Piedmont Medical Center and the new Atrium facility. Guinn believes having more emergency services available is a positive change.
Atrium plans to start construction in 2026 and aims to complete the project by 2029. This development could mark a significant shift in how residents access healthcare, making it more convenient and responsive.
