PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic — A significant development occurred as an appeals court has ordered a new trial for Wander Franco, the Tampa Bay Rays shortstop. Franco was previously convicted of sexually abusing a minor and received a two-year suspended sentence earlier this year.
Franco’s legal team argued that the original trial had major flaws and sought to overturn the conviction. On the other hand, the prosecution was pushing for a five-year sentence. The appeals court agreed with Franco’s lawyers and decided a fresh panel of judges should reconsider the case.
Teodosio Jáquez, Franco’s attorney, pointed out that the court recognized numerous issues in the initial ruling. “There were many flaws…and decided to send the case to a new trial,” he explained.
District Attorney José Martínez Montan, representing the prosecution in Puerto Plata, expressed confidence in the evidence from the first trial. He anticipates similar results when the case is retried.
The controversy began last year when Franco was accused of a four-month relationship with a 14-year-old girl. Reports claim he transferred thousands to the girl’s mother to gain her consent for the illegal relationship.
Franco, who signed a whopping 11-year, $182 million contract in November 2021, faced a dramatic turn in his career when the investigation was announced in August 2023. By January 2024, he had been arrested, leading to his placement on the restricted list by the Rays, effectively ending his salary during this period.
In the previous trial, a panel of judges convicted Franco of sexual abuse but found him not guilty of charges related to human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Interestingly, they also convicted the girl’s mother of commercial sexual exploitation, sentencing her to 10 years in prison. One judge even criticized the mother for her actions, stating, “Apparently, she was the one who thought she was handling the bat in the big leagues.”
The appeals court also ordered a new trial for the mother, indicating that the legal ramifications of this case continue to evolve.
