How New SNAP Work Requirements Will Affect Food Assistance for Brazos Valley Families

Brazos County families rely heavily on SNAP benefits to help put food on their tables. However, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is introducing significant changes that may affect eligibility and benefits for many.

Shannon Avila from the Brazos Valley Food Bank expressed just how crucial SNAP is for the community. “It’s hard to express its importance,” she said, highlighting the vital role these benefits play.

The new bill brings changes primarily related to work requirements. Previously, adults only needed to meet these requirements up to age 54. Now, that age has increased to 64. There’s also a shift for parents. Previously exempt if they had children under 18, parents must now meet work requirements if their children are 14 or older.

“Many may find themselves no longer eligible,” Avila cautioned. If individuals can’t provide the necessary documentation, they risk losing their benefits. The trend indicates that some vulnerable groups, like veterans and those experiencing homelessness, now must adhere to the same work rules, which could severely hinder their access to assistance.

Experts have noted that this change could affect food security for thousands in similar situations. According to recent studies, around 7.3 million people may face reduced food assistance due to these tightened requirements. Many families worry about how they’ll manage.

With the government shutdown earlier this fall, the timing of these changes couldn’t be worse. Avila and her team at the food bank are ready to help. They encourage anyone unsure about their benefits or documentation to reach out for support.

These changes highlight an important conversation about food security in America, as increased requirements can disproportionately affect those who already face challenges. As families navigate this new landscape, community support will be more essential than ever.
