It’s that exciting time of the year again! The Geminid meteor shower is peaking this weekend, with the best views happening under dark skies. According to the American Meteor Society, you can catch these stunning displays through mid-December. This year, you might see up to 120 meteors per hour if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, especially from Saturday night into Sunday’s early hours.
But what exactly causes meteor showers? Well, they happen when fast-moving space rocks enter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up, creating those beautiful trails we call shooting stars. Specks of dust and debris are scattered in space, and when we pass through these streams, the show begins. The Geminids come from an asteroid known as 3200 Phaethon, which is a bit different from most meteor showers, typically linked to comets.
To fully enjoy the Geminids, step away from city lights. They can wash out the bright meteors. It’s best to lie back in a lawn chair or a sleeping bag, allowing your eyes to adjust to the darkness for about 15-20 minutes. You might want to look towards the Gemini constellation, which gives the shower its name, but really, these meteors can light up the entire sky.
Renowned astronomer Bethany Cobb Kung emphasizes the unique experience: “The other stars are all stationary, so you’ll see these moving across the sky, leaving a little tail behind.”
