The U.S. recently seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. This move, described as significant by President Trump, adds to growing tensions with Caracas and has already impacted oil prices.
Trump announced, “We’ve just seized a very large tanker, the largest one ever.” He hinted that the U.S. might keep the oil from the tanker but did not elaborate further.
This seizure marks a new chapter in the U.S. strategy towards Venezuela’s oil, which is vital for the country’s economy. Previously, Washington had avoided interfering with Venezuela’s oil exports, despite ongoing sanctions. The tanker, previously known as the Adisa, was involved in Iranian oil trading, leading to its sanctioning.
Reports from British maritime analysts suggest the tanker, named Skipper, left Venezuela’s main oil port on December 4 or 5, carrying the country’s Merey heavy crude. The seizure could further strain Venezuela’s already delicate oil production. In November, Venezuela managed to export over 900,000 barrels of oil daily, but this figure is under pressure from market competition, particularly from Russia and Iran.
According to Rory Johnston, an analyst, while the seizure raises immediate supply concerns, it doesn’t fundamentally change the overall situation for Venezuela’s oil, as these barrels were set to circulate regardless.
Interestingly, after news of the seizure broke, oil futures saw a slight rise. Brent crude increased by 0.4% to $62.21, while West Texas Intermediate crude climbed the same percentage to $58.46.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has expressed that he believes U.S. military actions aim to destabilize his government and seize control of the nation’s oil reserves. Since September, over twenty U.S. military strikes targeting suspected drug transport in the region have occurred. These actions have led to calls for clarity and accountability, as many question their legality and the rationale behind them.
A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that many Americans oppose the military’s aggressive actions, with even some Trump supporters expressing concern.
Experts suggest that the U.S. must carefully navigate its next steps, weighing global diplomatic relations against its interests in the region.
