The Met Gala is back, and it’s shaping up to be an exciting night! This year, co-chairs include Beyoncé, Venus Williams, Nicole Kidman, and Anna Wintour. It’s Beyoncé’s first Gala since 2016, making her return a big deal for fans and fashionistas alike.
Known as “fashion’s biggest night out,” the event has seen many stars like Zendaya and Rihanna walk its red carpet. The co-chairs handle everything from guest lists to the decor, ensuring a memorable experience.
This year’s theme is “Costume Art,” aligning with the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibition. Opening to the public on May 10, the exhibition will link the human body, fashion, and art. Artworks like Albrecht Dürer’s 16th-century painting of Adam and Eve will be paired with modern garments. As curator Andrew Bolton put it, the goal is to connect artistic representations of the body with fashion as an embodied art form.
The exhibition will explore different themes, including the naked body and the pregnant body, making it a deep dive into how we see ourselves through fabric and form. This marks the debut of the new nearly 10,000-square-foot Condé Nast Galleries, a significant upgrade for the museum.
The Gala will likely see some eye-popping outfits. Expect to see interpretations of the body theme that might nod to elements like “naked dressing.” The event has a history of striking fashion moments, from Rihanna’s “omelette dress” to Diana Ross’s lengthy train.
Another interesting twist this year: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos as the main sponsors. This move has sparked conversations on social media about the growing intersection of tech and fashion, signifying a shift in how fashion events are funded and perceived.
Creative director Anthony Vaccarello from Yves Saint Laurent is also co-chairing alongside actor Zoë Kravitz. Other notable committee members include Doja Cat and Lena Dunham, adding a fresh mix of talent to the event.
