Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow has been clear: the Red Sox need to add power to their batting order. The team recently watched Alonso sign a surprising $155 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles, further intensifying competition in the American League East.
Breslow acknowledged that Boston’s offer for Alonso was less attractive than what the Orioles proposed. “We have to make the best decisions for the organization,” he said, noting the importance of players also making choices that are right for them personally.

Last season, the Red Sox ranked 15th in the league with 186 home runs. Trevor Story led with 25 homers, but injuries and trades diminished their power. While Bregman isn’t known for homers—his peak was 26 in 2019—he offers strong overall performance and leadership qualities.
With a payroll at $224 million, Boston is navigating the luxury tax threshold, which creates additional challenges in making significant signings. Recent moves by division rivals, like the Orioles and Blue Jays, highlight the urgency for Boston to act.
