ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore remains in jail this morning. He was fired just a day earlier for having what the university described as an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”
The Washtenaw County Jail hasn’t shared any details about Moore’s detainment or his bond status. Officials confirmed that police were called to investigate an alleged assault in Pittsfield Township, located a few miles south of Michigan Stadium, and a person was taken into custody. They assured the public there was no ongoing threat to safety.
The police statement emphasized the need for confidentiality to protect the integrity of the investigation. Meanwhile, Michigan University’s athletic director, Warde Manuel, stated that Moore’s actions violated university policy. “UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” he added.
Moore, who is married with three daughters, has not responded to requests for comments. He ended this season with a 9-3 record, following an 8-5 debut year. Last year, he signed a five-year contract with a base salary of $5.5 million, but since he was fired for cause, the university won’t need to pay him out for the remaining years.
This abrupt decision means Michigan is now searching for its third coach in just four years. Not too long ago, college football saw Coach Lane Kiffin leave playoff-bound Mississippi for LSU, highlighting the turbulence in coaching jobs.
Moore’s tenure began after the Wolverines’ national championship win in 2023. He succeeded Jim Harbaugh, who moved to the NFL as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. The 18th-ranked Wolverines (9-3, 7-2 Big Ten) are set to play No. 14 Texas on December 31 in the Citrus Bowl, with Biff Poggi stepping in as interim coach.
This year, Moore faced scrutiny and was suspended for two games due to self-imposed sanctions related to NCAA violations from a sign-stealing scandal. Yet, controversy shadows his career: earlier summons to the NCAA involved erasing a text thread with Connor Stalions, the staff member linked to his firing.
Just a few years back, Moore was viewed as a rising star in coaching. Born in Derby, Kansas, he started his football journey late, only beginning to play in high school. He played at Butler County Community College and later at Oklahoma under Bob Stoops. His coaching career started at Louisville, eventually leading him to Michigan, where he climbed the ranks rapidly and contributed to a championship-winning team.
In contrast, other college coaching scandals have plagued the sport for years, including high-profile dismissals like Mel Tucker from Michigan State for inappropriate conduct and Bobby Petrino from Arkansas due to a scandal involving deceit and personal misconduct.
This ongoing situation reflects the challenges college sports face, especially in maintaining professionalism among staff and the consequences that follow breaches of trust.
