Kingston, R.I. – Dec. 12, 2025 — Last week, the University of Rhode Island’s Child Development Centers made a meaningful impact by raising over $1,000 and collecting boxes of non-perishable food. They held their annual Art Exchange in the Memorial Union, benefiting the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.
Under the guidance of Director Jessica MacLeod and her talented staff, preschoolers created beautiful handmade artworks to thank donors. These young artists, aged three to five, engaged passers-by with enthusiasm, asking for donations in exchange for their unique crafts, including bookmarks, candle holders, and key chains.
The Child Development Centers provide high-quality early education programs for children. They are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), ensuring that children receive developmentally appropriate learning experiences. With locations on URI’s Kingston Campus and in downtown Providence, they also serve as a training ground for future educators.
A recent survey by the Food Research & Action Center found that 1 in 8 households with children experience food insecurity, highlighting the importance of initiatives like the Art Exchange. The CDC’s outreach helps combat this issue and shows how young children can make a significant difference in their communities.
Moreover, as a “lab school,” the CDC not only offers practical training but also contributes to early childhood education research, benefiting educators statewide. The staff actively participates in community events and professional organizations focused on child development.
