EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Tri-State Food Bank is hosting its annual holiday mobile food distribution this Friday at Central High School and Washington Square Mall. Each location will have 250 food kits ready for those in need.
Expect a crowd; in past years, the food has run out quickly—often within an hour. No pre-registration is necessary, so everyone is welcome to come by. Joe Klemczewski, the resource development officer at Tri-State Food Bank, emphasizes the honor system: “If you need food, please come,” he says. The goal is to ensure that families can enjoy the holiday.
Interestingly, donations have decreased since the loss of government funding earlier this year. However, the community has stepped up to help fill the gap. Klemczewski noted that people typically rally together during this time of year to tackle food insecurity.
The recent government shutdown, along with the pause in SNAP benefits, posed challenges for many families. Yet the community’s response has been impressive. Increased donations have made it possible for the food bank to not only assist during the holidays but also prepare for the winter ahead, when energy costs tend to rise.
Recent statistics show that food insecurity remains a pressing issue. According to Feeding America, over 35 million people faced hunger in 2021, a number that can fluctuate based on economic conditions and funding availability. Initiatives like this food distribution event are critical.
Klemczewski hopes this holiday giveaway brings joy and relief to families facing food insecurity, helping them have a brighter holiday season.
