UNMC Student Leaders Explore the Exciting Features of the New Residence Hall

UNMC student leaders recently explored the new residence hall, set to open next school year. Excitement is high among students and campus leaders.

“I think a lot of people will want to live here,” said UNMC Student President Brock Calamari. His enthusiasm was echoed by Annant Bir Kaur, president of the UNMC Graduate Student Association. She noted how this project came to life thanks to persistent discussions, saying, “We’ve done a fantastic job fitting many units into this space.”

The construction, which began in fall 2024, is progressing well. The building is now fully enclosed, allowing work to continue throughout the winter. The halls are set to welcome their first students in August 2026. This residence will provide housing for around 300 UNMC students.

During the tour, led by Phil Covington, EdD, and Kimberly Johnston, important design features were highlighted. Common areas for socializing, study rooms, and a convenience store will add to the campus experience. The layout also includes gaming spaces and a cozy fireplace area, aiming to foster a community atmosphere.

The view from the sixth floor had student leaders chatting about its breathtaking sights of Midtown Omaha and beyond. Calamari pointed out how the large windows will bring in natural light and offer a beautiful view of UNO’s clock tower.

UNMC Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, expressed his anticipation for the project. He emphasized that it will be a significant benefit for students, especially those coming from out of town or other countries. “It’s going to be great for students. I want to thank our facilities team and construction crews for their hard work in bringing this vision to life,” he said.

Bir Kaur highlighted the project’s unique aspects, especially its appeal for graduate researchers who may need a safe space to work late. “We’re definitely going to spread the word about this great place,” she added.

As construction continues, UNMC is working on leasing details, such as rental rates. This information will be shared later.

Overall, the excitement surrounding the project is palpable. Dr. Covington summarized the group’s enthusiasm, saying, “From concept to where we have landed, it’s remarkable.”
