Singapore: The High Commission of India in Singapore has set up a One Stop Centre (OSC) to assist Indian women in distress abroad. This move is part of the Indian government’s Sakhi One Stop Centre scheme, aimed at supporting women’s needs across the globe.
High Commissioner Shilpak Ambule explained that the OSC will provide a range of essential services. These include legal aid, medical help, psychological counseling, temporary shelter, and emergency response for those experiencing various forms of abuse—physical, sexual, emotional, or economic.
Located at the High Commission, this center is designed to be a safe space where women can seek help without hesitation. It features a 24/7 helpline (+65 8716 5521) and an email for immediate support (osc.singapore@mea.gov.in).
This initiative is backed by India’s Ministry of External Affairs and funded by the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF). Similar centers have been established in countries like Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar, indicating a broader commitment to women’s welfare across multiple regions.
Experts highlight the importance of such centers in providing holistic support. Dr. Mira Khanna, a social worker focusing on women’s issues, emphasizes that accessible resources can significantly mitigate the challenges faced by women in distress. She notes, “Having a one-stop solution makes it less daunting for women to reach out and seek help.” This reflects a growing recognition of the unique struggles women face, especially when abroad.
Recent statistics show a marked increase in reported cases of violence against women globally, particularly in foreign nations where support systems may be lacking. According to a 2022 survey by the UN Women, nearly 1 in 3 women have experienced violence in their lifetime. This reality makes the OSC’s establishment even more crucial.
