Scott Frost, the former Nebraska football coach, has filed a lawsuit against the University of Nebraska, claiming they breached his contract and mishandled his buyout payments. Frost was let go on September 11, 2022, after a disappointing record of 16-31 during his time at the school. His contract was set to last until December 2026 and included financial guarantees for termination. However, the dispute intensified when the university announced it would report Frost’s future payments as income on his 2022 taxes, potentially creating a hefty $1.7 million tax liability on income he hadn’t yet received.
Frost argues that this move is unfair, especially as he claims he only received the contentious tax form in September 2023, which led to additional penalties and complications involving his tax return. He describes Nebraska’s treatment in this matter as uncooperative and damaging, exposing him to unnecessary financial strain.
Further complicating the situation, Frost asserts that a provision in his contract regarding offsets expired in 2024. He joined the Los Angeles Rams after his dismissal and is now the head coach at the University of Central Florida, where he reflects on his Nebraska tenure with mixed feelings. At a media event in July 2025, he suggested that poor timing and circumstances played a significant role in the struggles he faced in Lincoln.
Frost remarked, “Don’t take the wrong job,” indicating his regret about returning to Nebraska instead of staying at UCF, where he previously led a successful program.
In recent years, coaching contracts have become more complex, with disputes like this becoming somewhat common. According to a survey conducted by the National Association of College Coaches, disputes over contract specifics have increased by 30% over the last five years.
