Karachi Fishermen Arrested by Indian Authorities
In a recent incident, 11 Pakistani fishermen, including two boys aged 12 and 15, were arrested by Indian maritime authorities. Their families, living in Ibrahim Hyderi, a fishing village in Karachi, are pleading for their release. They’re asking the Pakistani government to intervene and help bring their loved ones home.
Ahmed Brohi, father of one of the arrested fishermen, Ghulam Mustafa, expressed the desperation felt by the families. He said, “We are all poor and rely on fishing to survive. We need help; we’ve already been through so much.”
This isn’t a new issue. Four years ago, a similar fate befell three fishermen who remain in Indian jails for allegedly fishing near Sir Creek. Indian media reports indicated that the Coast Guard apprehended the latest group after their boat was found in Indian waters near Jakhau.
Fatima Majeed, chairperson of the Sindh Fisheries Department, pointed out that the fishermen might have crossed into Indian waters by accident. She noted the absence of visible borders in the Arabian Sea makes it easy for fishermen to inadvertently drift into another country’s territory. Arrests often happen near Kajar Creek or Sir Creek, close to India’s Gujarat state.
Majeed emphasized that these fishermen, struggling to make a living, don’t see clear boundaries. The coastal areas are marshy and difficult to navigate. She also highlighted the humanitarian aspect, urging Indian authorities to release the children involved, stating, “They are just young boys.”
Records from the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum report that the number of Pakistani fishermen currently in Indian jails has climbed to around 74. While both governments have exchanged prisoners in the past, this process has slowed due to ongoing tensions.
According to a 2023 survey by the Fisherfolk Forum, over 60% of fishermen reported fears of arrest while fishing due to unclear maritime boundaries. Many shared emotional stories on social media, echoing the call for compassion and understanding from both nations for families caught in these situations.
As this situation unfolds, it highlights the struggles of impoverished fishermen and the impact of geopolitical issues on everyday lives.
