Kentucky and Indiana are reigniting their basketball rivalry this Saturday at Rupp Arena. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN.
These two teams used to face off every year, but they haven’t met since the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The last time Indiana played at Rupp Arena was in 2011.
UK’s head coach, Mark Pope, recalls his own experiences against Indiana. He’s excited to see this rivalry revived.
“I love this game,” Pope stated. “What Indiana is doing now is impressive. When you watch them, you’ll see elements reminiscent of Bob Knight’s teams. They play with great movement and smart decision-making.”
This season, Indiana started strong under first-year head coach Darian DeVries, winning their first seven games. However, they faced setbacks against Minnesota and Louisville before bouncing back with a dominant 113-72 victory over Penn State.
Kentucky, on the other hand, is 6-4 after a recent win against North Carolina Central. Pope acknowledges the team’s slow start but sees promise ahead.
“Last year, we had the most wins against top 15 teams in college basketball history, but this year we’re 0-4 against them,” he said. “We haven’t begun as planned, but I believe we have a lot of potential.”
As these teams meet for the 58th time, UK leads the series 32-25, with a strong record of 10-3 at home.
Historically, this rivalry has been significant in college basketball. In the late 1990s, both teams consistently ranked in the top ten, showcasing their talent and intensity on the court.
