Hyderabad: Many supporters of incoming U.S. President Donald Trump have expressed frustration towards H-1B visa holders and the Indian community. This dissatisfaction is mainly due to the rise in illegal migration from India, rather than those following legal immigration paths. Former diplomat Syed Akbaruddin shared these insights in a recent interview.
Akbaruddin suggests that India should regulate the so-called ‘dunki’ route, which is a method that some people use to migrate illegally to the U.S. He recommends implementing tough laws against the agents facilitating this illegal migration. Similar to how strict regulations reduced the incidents of contract marriages, tight measures could help address illegal immigration.
He points out that both legal and illegal migration have been under discussion for some time. Unfortunately, India has not adequately informed its people about following correct channels for immigration. “We ignored the issue of illegal migration,” he said. “Meanwhile, the U.S. has become increasingly divided, which made it hard for them to address this growing concern.”
Despite the negative attention, Akbaruddin believes the Indian diaspora’s positive contributions in various fields will not be diminished by the actions of a few who migrate illegally. He emphasizes that the goodwill India has built from the successes of its people in the U.S. remains strong.
Currently, illegal migration from India has increased, putting India among the top groups of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. Many who attempt to migrate illegally face severe consequences, while those who facilitate this journey often escape punishment. Akbaruddin argues that India should not only focus on deportation but also recognize its responsibility towards its own citizens. “If we can bring back people from crisis zones, we should also accept our own. This process needs to be normalized and accepted,” he explained.
He also pointed out that creating safe and legal paths for migration would benefit both India and the U.S. Each year, foreign remittances from the U.S. to India amount to about $125 billion. By reframing the immigration issue in terms of its benefits, Akbaruddin believes India can make significant progress.
In the context of U.S. trade, he notes that Trump’s ability to use immigration as a bargaining chip is limited. If India agrees to accept its illegal migrants, it could strengthen its position in negotiations with the U.S. “This is all about give-and-take in diplomacy,” he concluded.
