A Durham Academy alum was among those injured in a mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, Saturday night. The school’s Head of School, Michael Ulku-Steiner, shared the news with the community, identifying Kendall Turner from the class of 2025 as one of the victims.
Kendall underwent surgery and is currently in critical but stable condition, according to updates. Her parents were with her in Providence shortly after the incident. Mayor Brett Smiley reported that one other victim has been discharged from the hospital, while the remaining seven are stable.
In a heartfelt message, Ulku-Steiner encouraged the community to support Kendall and her family, asking for prayers and positive thoughts. Thankfully, seven other Durham Academy alumni attending Brown are safe and unharmed.
Kendall has been a part of Durham Academy since preschool. She briefly attended the North Carolina School of Science and Math during her junior year but returned to finish her education at Durham Academy, graduating in May 2025.
