Valentine’s Day treats may change in the coming years. The FDA is set to ban Red Dye 3, which gives food and drinks a vibrant red color. This decision comes after concerns about the dye linked to cancer risk and behavioral issues in children.
Red Dye 3, also called erythrosine, has been under scrutiny since a petition was filed in 2022. Advocates argue that this color additive poses health risks. As a result, manufacturers must reformulate their products by 2027 or 2028. This means we could see changes in candies and snacks pretty soon.
Many people wonder where Red Dye 3 can be found. The Environmental Working Group claims that over 3,000 products contain this dye. Here are some common items:
- Candies: Pez, Brach’s Candy Corn, and conversation hearts.
- Desserts and Snacks: Betty Crocker Fruit by the Foot and various cookies.
- Dairy and Frozen Foods: Ice cream and frozen yogurt.
- Fruits: Maraschino cherries and some fruit cocktails.
- Beverages: Strawberry milk and certain sodas.
- Medications: Some cough syrups and gummy vitamins.
The history of Red Dye 3 shows it’s been problematic for years. First made from petroleum, it was banned in cosmetics due to cancer concerns back in 1990. Since then, the public has become more aware of the potential dangers of artificial colorings.
The FDA’s announcement reveals that while studies on lab rats show significant risks, the levels of Red No. 3 typically found in food are much lower and not linked to the same health issues. Nonetheless, many countries, including those in the EU, have already banned this dye.
Manufacturers have until 2027 for food products and 2028 for medications to phase out Red Dye 3. As Valentine’s Day approaches, it will be interesting to see how these changes affect our favorite treats.
