Dr. Bharat Barai, a prominent Indian-American physician and community leader, has raised concerns about U.S. tariffs on Indian imports. He argues that these tariffs could harm the long-standing relationship between India and the U.S. He believes that India has been unfairly targeted, particularly with policies surrounding Russian oil imports.
Barai noted that previous progress in U.S.-India relations has faced setbacks, especially after President Trump’s return to office. He feels the recent trade measures seem more politically motivated than based on economic rationale, which threatens the trust built over years.
Addressing the trade deficit, Barai acknowledges the U.S. has a gap with India but insists any efforts to fix that should be reasonable. “Using steep tariffs to narrow that gap is counterproductive,” he stated. He suggested lower tariffs, around 15%, would be more appropriate, as high tariffs can disrupt supply chains and weaken cooperation.
His criticism extends to the specific 25% duty linked to Russian oil imports. While he condemns Russia’s actions in Ukraine, he argues that India’s situation is unfair. “China imports more oil than India but faces less penalty due to its strategic importance in global supply chains, particularly in rare earth metals,” he explained.
Barai believes the inconsistency in U.S. trade policies sends mixed signals to allies. He pointed to the influence of a small group within the U.S. administration in shaping these tariffs, stating that many lawmakers privately disagree but fear political backlash from challenging such policies.
Recent elections indicate growing public dissatisfaction with these tariff decisions, which Barai claims are arbitrary and not reflective of broader congressional agreement. He hopes that the Supreme Court will reaffirm that tariff-setting authority belongs to Congress.
Looking to the future, Barai warned that relations may remain tense unless the tariffs are lifted through negotiation. He acknowledged that Indian companies are reducing Russian oil imports in response to international pressures but emphasized that India needs reliable and economical energy sources to serve its large population.
Despite the current challenges with the U.S., Barai highlighted India’s expanding influence globally. The nation is forging closer ties with Europe, establishing a free trade agreement with the UK, and strengthening its position in Africa and with Australia.
