The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has made an important update to its “General Handbook” regarding artificial intelligence (AI). This update, released on December 16, 2025, emphasizes that AI cannot replace divine inspiration or the personal effort needed to receive it. It also warns that relying on AI cannot substitute for meaningful relationships with God or others.
The handbook encourages members to model their interactions after Jesus Christ, who sought divine direction, studied sacred texts, and built real connections with people. He prayed, learned, and fulfilled God’s will, putting relationships at the center of his teachings.
To help members use AI wisely in Church activities, the handbook outlines four guiding principles:
1. Use AI in ways that uplift and align with Church values.
2. Understand that AI cannot replace the hard work needed for spiritual preparation, though it can aid in tasks like research and editing.
3. Avoid relying on AI for advice on sensitive topics, such as health or finances; professionals should be consulted instead.
4. Keep personal information secure; do not use non-Church AI tools for sensitive data.
Church leaders have echoed these principles over the past two years. In January 2024, Elder David A. Bednar addressed students at Brigham Young University (BYU) about the dual nature of AI. He stressed its capabilities depend on how it’s used. He reminded them not to let the speed and accuracy of technology undermine their spiritual journey. “There are no spiritual shortcuts,” he said.
A few months later, Elder Bednar urged members to seek the Holy Ghost’s guidance in their use of AI, emphasizing that technological advancements like AI are part of the Lord’s plan in modern times.
Elder Gerrit W. Gong has also shared insights on AI. In a March 2024 address, he offered principles for Church employees on using AI responsibly. He emphasized that while AI can be a useful tool, it should never replace our relationship with God. He further stated that God will guide those who earnestly seek wisdom and understanding, reminding that AI cannot generate divine truth.
At a Vatican summit in October 2025, Elder Gong spoke on the ethics of AI, highlighting the importance of accurately representing faith in AI systems. “Faith and ethics evaluation of AI is needed,” he stated, as more people turn to AI for information about religion.
