Five talented faculty members from UC San Diego have been awarded the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), as announced by President Joe Biden. This honor recognizes their exceptional contributions to research and innovation.

The awardees include:
- John Hwang, an associate professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He leads a project collaborating with 11 research teams to develop tools that will help US companies design air taxis more efficiently. The goal is to create a network of air taxis for urban transportation, and he was nominated by NASA.
- Duygu Kuzum, an associate professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Her work focuses on advancing nanoelectronics and creating neurotechnology to explore how the brain processes information.
- Sophia Merrifield, an associate researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She specializes in marine robotics and uses autonomous vehicles to investigate ocean dynamics. Her research includes studying air-sea interactions and turbulence, and she was nominated by the Office of Naval Research.
- Sonya Neal, an associate professor in Cell and Developmental Biology. Her research focuses on the dangers of misfolded proteins in cells. She aims to involve community college students in her research efforts and was nominated by the National Science Foundation.
- Rose Yu, an associate professor in Computer Science and Engineering. She works on combining artificial intelligence models with real-world physics. Her research involves deep learning models that analyze complex dynamics and she was nominated by the Army Research Office and the Department of Defense.
President Biden recently recognized nearly 400 scientists and engineers with this award, celebrating those who are making significant impacts early in their careers. The PECASE is the highest honor given by the U.S. government to early-career scientists and engineers, highlighting their work across various fields.
