One of the most beloved family traditions in the Appalachian Highlands kicks off its 29th season tonight. The Food City Speedway in Lights, powered by TVA, brings joy to children across 18 counties in southwestern Virginia and northeast Tennessee, all centered around the famous Bristol Motor Speedway.
This magical attraction features a stunning light display that stretches over five miles, creating a festive atmosphere for visitors. From 6 to 10 p.m. each night, families can wander through a sparkling wonderland.
Key Highlights of This Year
22 million dollars: Since its inception in 1996, the Bristol chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities has raised over $22 million for child-focused charities. This money supports more than 90 local agencies that help children in need.
4 million lights: The display boasts an awe-inspiring four million lights lighting up the Speedway and its surroundings.
300,000 festive lights: In the Darrell Waltrip Grandstand, guests can enjoy the Hardee’s Restaurants Symphony in Lights, where lights twinkle to the beat of favorite holiday tunes.
35,000 marshmallows: Each season, an average of 35,000 marshmallows are roasted in the Christmas Village. The record? An impressive 52,555 in a single year!
2,341 guests: The event’s single-night attendance record stands at 2,341, achieved just before Christmas in 2014.
A Rich Tradition
Claudia Byrd, the Executive Director of SCC-Bristol, recalls how this “little light show” has transformed into a cherished tradition for many families over the years. New additions keep the excitement alive, such as the ice-skating rink introduced in 2002, which remains a favorite today.
Community Engagement
This year, the event features 14 vendors in the Appalachian-themed Christmas Village, offering unique crafts and holiday treats. From handmade ornaments to funnel cakes, there’s something for everyone. Social media buzz is a testament to its popularity, with families sharing their experiences using hashtags like #SpeedwayInLights.
Environmental Impact
High-efficiency LED lights are used throughout the display, showcasing a commitment to sustainability. In total, about 150 miles of wiring lights up this festive experience, reflecting a significant investment in eco-friendly practices.
The Food City Speedway in Lights isn’t just a holiday event; it’s a vibrant reflection of community spirit and charity that continues to grow. As families gather to make memories, they also support those in need, ensuring that the light of giving shines brightly throughout the season.
