Google Pixel phones are rolling out a new feature: the ability to switch to a three-button navigation layout, similar to what Samsung Galaxy users have. This is currently available in the Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1 update.
In recent years, Android has leaned towards gesture-based navigation, but the traditional three-button setup still exists. Typically, Android’s button order is “Back,” “Home,” and “Recents” from left to right. Samsung, however, features a reversed layout: “Recents,” “Home,” then “Back.” This has been a long-standing difference between the two brands.
Samsung users have always been able to adjust this layout to their liking. Now, Google is joining in, allowing Pixel users to customize their navigation buttons as well. To switch the layout, go to Settings > System > Navigation mode > 3-button navigation > Settings.
This addition welcomes both Pixel and Samsung users. It caters to those accustomed to the Samsung layout, making the user experience smoother. With muscle memory playing a big role in how we navigate our phones, this change removes some confusion for long-time Samsung users switching to Pixels.
Besides user convenience, there’s a broader trend in the smartphone industry. A recent study showed that 70% of smartphone users prefer customizable features, and navigation settings are no exception. This aligns with what tech experts like Reuben E. from TechRadar point out: users today value personal customization more than ever.
Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1 is available for all Tensor-powered Pixel devices. This is part of Google’s ongoing effort to enhance user experience and adaptability in a competitive market.
