Discover 50 Years of Thrilling Science and Hair-Raising Fun at the Bakken Museum!

A major milestone is here! The Bakken Museum in Minneapolis is celebrating its 50th anniversary of inspiring curiosity about electricity and science.

Founded by Earl Bakken in 1975, the museum started as a place to explore “Electricity in Life.” It’s now a vibrant hub of scientific learning and exhibits. From a collection of rare books and instruments to displays about electricity and even plants and medicine, there’s a lot to discover.

Anika Taylor, the museum’s vice president of programs, loves seeing visitors connect with the exhibits. “There’s a real joy in learning here,” she shares. “It’s magical to watch someone have a moment of discovery.”

One of the museum’s standout exhibits focuses on Mary Shelley and her classic novel, “Frankenstein.” This connection is especially close to Bakken, who was inspired by the idea of bringing lifeless things to life. The exhibit covers not just Shelley’s story, but also how her work laid the groundwork for science fiction, which in turn fuels scientific curiosity.

The Bakken has become a favorite destination for school field trips. Kids can engage in hands-on activities, like the static electricity shock circle that makes their hair stand up, or the Bakkenspiel, where they create music together. Board member Heather Walch loves seeing students light up with joy as they learn.

Looking to the future, the museum is also expanding its reach through a STEM education program that travels to schools across Minnesota. This initiative allows educators to connect with students in their communities, bringing science to life wherever they are.

The museum hopes to shed its “hidden gem” status and encourage more visitors to join the celebration of its rich history. Throughout this anniversary year, the Bakken will host various events, including a party in October and family discovery days, making it a great time to explore.
