On December 17, Landmark by Hillwood, a new development in Denton, presented this donation to the Denton Community Food Center (DCFC) during its weekly food distribution. DCFC has been serving residents since 1974, relying on community support to operate.
Hillwood’s investment reflects its longstanding commitment to food security in North Texas. “Helping our new neighbors in Denton during the holidays is vital,” said Kimberly Cole and Andrew Pieper, project managers at Landmark. They aim to draw attention to the great work DCFC does.
Each dollar donated to DCFC goes a long way. Through partnerships with food banks, they can provide meals to local families in need. This donation is expected to supply about 50 families with over 100 pounds of nutritious food each, enough to last a week.
The Importance of Cash Donations
Unlike many organizations, DCFC does not rely on government funding, operating entirely on community donations and volunteer efforts. Financial contributions give them the flexibility to respond quickly to food needs and support families facing tough times.
Tom Newell, the Board Chair of DCFC, mentioned, “Our aim is to assist families during challenging times, like job losses or health issues.” Many families in the area live paycheck to paycheck, navigating the rising costs of food and other essentials.
Year-Round Hunger Awareness
While donations tend to surge during the holidays, hunger exists year-round. “Over half of our annual donations come in November and December,” Newell noted. He emphasized that DCFC appreciates community support during this season but wants to remind everyone that the need continues beyond the holidays.
Hillwood’s $5,000 donation marks just the beginning of a long-term commitment to food security in Denton. For nearly four decades, the Perot family and Hillwood have supported local food banks, contributing over half a million meals at their other locations in Denton County.
