Archbishop Hicks moved from the Diocese of Joliet, Illinois, where he had been serving since September 2020. He previously worked closely with Cardinal Blase Cupich in Chicago, contributing to the Archdiocese as an Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General since 2015.

In a recent interview, Hicks shared his vision for his new role. He emphasized the importance of being a “shepherd” and highlighted the need to connect with the community. “I want to live out our faith together and share God’s love,” he remarked.

He brings valuable experience from Chicago, where he learned the nuances of church governance and prioritizing the mission of the Church. Hicks noted, “It’s easy to get distracted. We must focus on God’s will and invite others to join us.”

One significant challenge ahead is addressing the Church’s response to clerical sexual abuse. The Archdiocese of New York has introduced a $300 million fund to compensate survivors. He stated that the issue will not simply vanish: “We can’t pretend it’s behind us.”

Looking ahead, Hicks hopes to foster unity within the Church. Growing up near Pope Leo XIV in Chicago, he shares a similar vision for a Church that radiates peace and healing. “I want to work with Pope Leo to bring light to our communities,” he said.

Recent statistics underscore the Church’s need for change. A 2022 report highlighted that nearly one in four Americans felt that the Church had done poorly in addressing past abuses. This further emphasizes the necessity for leaders like Hicks to bring forth accountability and healing.

In his new leadership role, Archbishop Hicks faces both challenges and opportunities. His commitment to serving the community reflects a longing for a Church that acts with compassion and purpose in a complex world.
