Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making a big impact in protecting elephants in Tamil Nadu. Recently, AI-powered cameras were installed along a railway stretch in the Boluvampatti block to help prevent elephant deaths. According to Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary of Environment, Climate Change, and Forests, these cameras have been very effective. They’ve helped elephants cross safely almost 6,000 times in just 22 months.
These advanced 360-degree hybrid thermal cameras were set up in February 2024 at a cost of ₹7.2 crore. They work by detecting elephants near the railway lines and alerting train operators, which helps avoid accidents. Ms. Sahu mentioned that the system is not perfect, but it has shown remarkable results. “Zero elephant deaths on railway tracks in the last two years,” she noted, highlighting this major turnaround compared to past tragedies.
A study from the Wildlife Conservation Society supports this, stating that technology like AI can significantly reduce wildlife fatalities in regions where human habitats intersect with animal paths.
