Bringing blood glucose to normal levels can significantly reduce the risk of severe heart issues for those with prediabetes. A recent study published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology found that lifestyle changes that lead to remission of prediabetes can cut the chances of heart attack, heart failure, and premature death by up to 50%.

The study analyzed data from over 2,400 individuals with prediabetes. It revealed that keeping fasting blood glucose levels below 97 mg/dL serves as an effective marker for reduced heart disease risk. This threshold is applicable worldwide, offering a straightforward target for healthcare providers to aim for in their patients.

Dr. Andreas Birkenfeld, one of the study authors and a leading figure at the German Center for Diabetes Research, emphasized the long-term benefits of reaching this remission. He noted that not only does it delay or prevent type 2 diabetes, but it also provides considerable protection against cardiovascular diseases for decades.

The research followed participants in the U.S. for 20 years and in China for 30 years. It highlighted a significant drop in cardiovascular-related deaths and overall mortality among those who achieved remission.

Traditionally, cardiovascular health has focused on controlling blood pressure, lowering LDL cholesterol, and stopping smoking. According to this new insight, maintaining normal blood glucose levels should be the fourth pillar in prevention strategies.

Dr. Birkenfeld stated, “Normalizing glucose levels during the prediabetes stage can drastically lower the long-term risks of heart attacks and other serious conditions.” This finding suggests a shift in how we approach both diabetes management and cardiovascular prevention.
