MOSCOW (AP) — During his annual news conference, President Vladimir Putin stated that Russian forces are making progress in Ukraine and expressed confidence in reaching military goals if peace talks do not meet Russia’s demands.
Putin claimed that Russian troops have “fully seized strategic initiative” and believe they will achieve more by the end of the year. He asserted that their forces are advancing and that the enemy is retreating. This confidence follows the initial months of the conflict in 2022, when Ukraine successfully defended Kyiv against the larger Russian army.
The discussion mostly revolved around the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. This year, rather than focusing on local issues, Putin addressed the situation in Ukraine, possibly reflecting the Kremlin’s intention to address public concern after almost four years of war.
Putin mentioned that he is willing to engage in a peace settlement that tackles what he calls the “root causes” of the conflict. He insists on terms that include recognizing several regions as Russian territory and the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from certain areas. Kyiv has clearly rejected these demands.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated he might consider dropping NATO membership if security guarantees are provided by the U.S. and other allies. Yet, he maintains that NATO membership offers the best security for Ukraine.
Interestingly, during the conference, Putin dismissed Western claims regarding Russian plans to attack European nations as unfounded, arguing that such narratives serve to distract from internal issues facing those countries.
On the topic of troops, Putin claimed that volunteer enrollment has exceeded 400,000 this year, although independent verification of this number remains elusive. Reports suggest that while the government promotes high pay and benefits for soldiers, some recruits face pressure to enlist.
In the background, Ukraine continues to seek financial aid from Western countries. EU leaders recently discussed providing a significant interest-free loan to Ukraine, although plans to utilize frozen Russian assets were stalled due to disagreements.
Despite the ongoing turmoil, the conference featured lighter moments, including a young man using the platform to propose to his girlfriend, which Putin playfully acknowledged.
As the situation unfolds, both sides remain firm: Ukraine seeks security and international support, while Russia holds fast to its territorial claims and conditions for peace.
