Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 made waves at the Indie Game Awards, securing the titles of Game of the Year and Debut Game. For Sandfall Interactive, these wins were monumental. Yet, the excitement was short-lived.
Just after the ceremony, controversy erupted. Sandfall Interactive revealed that they had used generative AI during the game’s development, which breached the awards’ strict rules. Consequently, the Indie Game Awards decided to rescind both honors.
In their official statement, they emphasized that generative AI should not be involved in any aspect of a game submitted for consideration. When Sandfall Interactive submitted Clair Obscur, they had agreed to this rule, stating no generative AI was part of the project. This promise allowed them to be nominated and ultimately win.
However, on the day of the awards, producer François Meurisse acknowledged the use of some generative AI in production. Although these elements were later patched out, the awards committee ruled this still violated their guidelines. Thus, they had to revoke the nominations.
“Due to the confirmation of generative AI usage on the day of the Indie Game Awards, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is disqualified from its nomination. While it’s a fantastic game, it does not meet our regulations,” the committee said.
With Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 disqualified, the awards will now be given to the runners-up. Sorry We’re Closed will receive the Debut Game award, and Blue Prince takes home the Game of the Year title.
This incident raises important questions about the role of technology in creativity. According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, 70% of gamers expressed concerns about AI in game development, fearing it might compromise originality. As the industry grapples with these issues, it’s clear that transparency and adherence to ethical standards are more critical than ever.
Historical context also adds depth; in the past, the use of technology in creative fields has sparked debates—notably in music and art. As we navigate these changes, the conversation around AI in gaming will likely continue to evolve.
